ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The number of house fires is down in Albany.

The Albany Fire Department responded to 213 structure fires last year. That is down from the 252 in 2011. Officials say 46-percent of those fires started in the kitchen.

Firefighters say with greater awareness of fire dangers, that number could continue to drop.

"This year we saw about a 12 percent drop in fire calls which is a good thing which shows that the efforts that we are using to get out to get out to the public, get more involved in the public and make people aware of what's causing these fires is working," says Deputy Fire Chief Ron Rowe.

The department will host a free fire extinguisher and smoke detector safety course at the government center on January 22nd, 23rd, 29th, and 30th.
