ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

We're just a year away from the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.  We were able to get a little preview of the events to come from some Albany area athletes Friday.

Special Olympics held its Winter Games this morning at three different locations in Albany.

More than 300 athletes from Dougherty and Lee counties took part in basketball and bowling.  About one hundred volunteers helped organize the event.

The director of the Dougherty Special Olympics says the event wouldn't have been possible without support from local businesses and from civic groups "the Exchange Club came out to help us with the Pledge of Allegiance, that's important for the kids to be involved with that.

It's just a total community effort to put these games on so these kids can have a good time," said Russ Allen the Special Olympics Dougherty Chair.
