ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
No charges will be filed against the driver of a truck who struck a woman and her four children on Thursday night in Worth County. 27-year-old Contessa Brown was killed on impact. Two of her children remain hospitalized.
Her relatives say they have no choice but to hold it together. "Trying to hold it together for the kids. That's our main concern right now is the kids," said Jennifer Thomas-Jackson, the victim's sister- in-law. According to another sister-in-law, "She was a loving, fine young girl with four beautiful children." said Ebony McCloud. Brown's children - ages nine, seven, five, and seven months - were with her Thursday night when she was killed. Troopers say they were walking along the edge of Red Rock Road around 6:30 in the evening.
Brown was pushing the infant in a stroller when an east bound Dodge Ram pickup struck them head on. The driver of the truck, Henry Ried of Hartsfield, will not be charged. Troopers say he was unable to see them until it was too late.
"It's really hard to see out here. It's blacktop and at night time if you don't have really good lights it's really hard to see on this road," said neighbor Jessica Peters. Neighbors who live along Red Rock say they've seen their fair share of crashes along the stretch of the road which they admit is dangerous. "It's really not surprising considering how this road is, it's horrible," said Peters.
The seven month old child who was ejected from the stroller was taken to Phoebe for observation. A seven year old little girl was taken to a Macon hospital but relatives and troopers say their injuries are not life threatening. "For the love of the family we're going to have to pull it together," said McCloud. Relatives will have to pull it together for four kids who will now have to grow up without their mother.
Troopers believe Brown was walking on the edge of the road to push the stroller. She was walking against the flow of traffic which is the rule of the road for pedestrians. The driver of the truck did stop and asked for assistance in getting someone to call 911. So far, funeral arrangements for Brown have not been finalized.
