ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The state of Georgia is now in the midst of a flu epidemic. The flu is hitting Georgia harder this year than it has in nearly a decade.
But here in South West Georgia, flu cases are down compared to late November, early December.
Officials with the Georgia Department of Public Health say the flu hit our area early in the season.
Flu activity is widespread throughout the state and country and health officials are urging you to protect yourself.
The most effective way to prevent the flu is the flu vaccine and there is plenty of vaccine available statewide. Every healthy individual over the age of six months should get a flu vaccine.
"The activity is still fairly widespread, but it looks like we are trending down, the other important point is what people can do to protect themselves, and that is to constantly wash your hands" says District Health Director Dr. Jacqueline Grant.
The predominant strain of flu circulating in Georgia and around the country is H3N2. This year's vaccine is a close match making it effective in preventing the flu.
