ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The Department of Transportation shut down the Broad Avenue Bridge in 2009, after divers inspecting the pilings of the old bridge told city officials the bridge was in bad shape and needed to come down soon.
Historians and a Veterans Coalition officially decommissioned the bridge in February of 2012.
City Engineer Bruce Maples said at the time that half the bridge's footings weren't supported, concrete has washed away and there's just exposed rebar, making the bridge unsafe for cars and pedestrians.
Demolition of the Broad Avenue Bridge has continued night and day in downtown Albany.
Demolition began a little more than six weeks ago and should be totally finished in February to make room for a new bridge.
A Florida company won an $11.8 million contract to tear it down and build a replacement.
