VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Prosecutors are now preparing a murder case against a Valdosta State University student accused of killing his ex-girlfriend on campus.

Valdosta Police Investigators say they hope the arrest of 18-year-old Darien Mehuex for the murder of 17-year old Jasmine Benjamin will bring some closure to the Valdosta State University campus and the Benjamin family.

"I've spoken with some of the representatives of the family this morning and they're very happy of the outcome of this too," said Cmdr. Brian Childress, VPD.

GBI Agent Steve Turner says Mehuex strangled Benjamin, his ex-girlfriend. Both were VSU students from Lawrenceville.

"We knew early on during the investigation the cause of death, that was explained to us verbally by the medical examiner, but obviously we could not release that at that point, because it was still an active ongoing investigation and still is an active investigation," said Childress.

Benjamin was found dead on a study hall couch in Georgia Hall on VSU's campus November 18th. Her step-father, James Jackson, told WALB shortly after her death that he suspected Mehuex killed his step-daughter. He said Benjamin broke up with Mehuex but he remained very possessive.

"This was a hard case, this was a difficult case, especially when you have a 17-year-old young lady that's life was taken," said Childress.

Investigators say late last night Mehuex surrendered at the Schley County Sheriff's Office after he learned a murder warrant was issued for his arrest.

Mehuex was transported to Valdosta this morning and is in the Lowndes County jail tonight.

The GBI says that Jasmine Benjamin's ex-boyfriend has been arrested for strangling her.

Jasmine is the VSU freshman student that was found dead on a study hall couch on campus.

The GBI reports that 18-year-old Darien Mehuex was arrested late Thursday night in Ellaville when he surrendered to the Schley Co. Sheriff's Office, after he learned that a murder warrant had been taken for him.

The GBI says that looked for Mehuex in his hometown of Lawrenceville, but he was in Schley County.

Benjamin was found dead of asphyxiation on November 17, 2012. The medical examiner never ruled out foul play.

The Thomasville GBI office is handling the investigation.
