2012: warmest year ever in US

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

2012 was the warmest year ever in the United States and 2013 is off to an unusually warm start.

The average annual US temperature last year was 55.32 degrees.

That's a full degree higher than the previous record set in 1998.

Scientists say to smash a record by that much is shocking.

One golfer we talked to said he definitely felt the heat on the course last year.

"It was very hot, very hot. If you hadn't got acclimatized to the weather then it was really rough on you, but if you're from Southwest Georgia then you learn to adapt to those kind of conditions. If you're an avid golfer then you deal with it," said Victor Singleton.

Scientists say a mild winter and widespread drought led to the record.
