ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some of Dougherty County's oldest documents will have a new home next week.

The Dougherty County Library finalized an agreement with Thronateeska Heritage Center to house the library's famous genealogy department.

The center will open their doors next Thursday for people to view records like census reports from as early as the 1800s, civil war records, and city and county land deeds.

Officials say the documents were moved from their original home at the Central Library branch while the branch undergoes a $5 million renovation.

"They can just come here to Thronateeska. There's no charge for access. There will be a check in and some procedures that we will have in place to make sure that we protect the materials but also track the users. We want to be able to tell to library officials and folks how many people actually come and use this resource that we have," says Thronateeska's Executive Director Tommy Gregors.

Thronateeska's new genealogy department will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm.
