ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Every day hundreds of pints of blood are needed to keep up with the demand from area clinics and hospitals.

The Red Cross is struggling to meet the demand.

Empty chairs at Red Cross donor centers are bad news for patients who are accident victims or who need regular blood transfusions.

Red Cross officials say that while blood is the gift of life, a decline in donors this time of year is partly because people are thinking more about other types of gifts.

Leana Thomas, from the Albany Red Cross Blood Donation Center said, "colleges are out, high schools are out and we get a lot of our blood from those two institutions. And people are on vacation and holiday."

Most Red Cross donor centers are open six days a week.

You can go there or to a blood dive in your area.
