ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The stinky smell from a chemical leak in Cordele is gone, but it underscored how quickly fumes can spread.

Emergency first responders met Thursday for a Homeland Security certification session to plan strategies if dozens or even thousands of people were killed in a disaster.

"The team players are going to play a very important part," said Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler.  "The law enforcement, the funeral directors, the EMT's, the firefighters, state emergency management. So everybody plays an important role and everyone know their role."

Instructors pointed out lessons learned by emergency responders at Hurricane Katrina and the 9-11 terrorist attacks, saying many communities need to plan to work together in time of disaster.
