HAHIRA, GA (WALB) -
Lowndes County Sheriff's investigators believe the gun used in the murder of a Hahira man last Friday was also used in another crime the suspect was convicted of.
David Harrelson was charged with the murder of his neighbor Josh Commander Friday.
But investigators say Harrelson was charged and convicted of aggravated assault in 2010, and the same gun that was seized by Lowndes County deputies then was believed to be in his possession during the shooting Friday.
Authorities say they turned over all of Harrelson's weapons to a relative in 2010, who was supposed to keep them from Harrelson -- who was a convicted felon. Now that person may be facing criminal charges.
"It was our expectation that that person would have maintained ownership, and not given them back to Mr. Harrelson. I mean certainly, we would never release a firearm to someone that we knew should not possess one," said Lt. Stryde Jones, Lowndes Co. Investigator.
Investigators say they are still in the process of tracing the gun back to determine how it got in Harrelson's hands.
