The Dougherty County school system has a new leader on the board.

During Wednesday's special called meeting members elected Carol Tharin as board chair in a four to three vote, beating out Darrel Ealum.

Outgoing chair James Bush handed over the gavel and offered Tharin his support.

"I'm very humbled that the board members saw fit to put me in that position. I never expected that or sought that position, but now that I am the new board chair, my sole goal is to pull the board together so that we work as a group," said Tharin.

Tharin has been on the board since 2010.  Bush was unanimously elected vice chair.
