A Valdosta Police officer assaulted by an accused shoplifter will have a long recovery from his injuries.
Officer Alvin May will have surgery for multiple fractures to his ankle. It will be months before he can return to work.
Officer May was off-duty Saturday and shopping at Wal-Mart when 18-year-old Spencer Lonon was detained, suspected of stealing computer parts and video games.
May saw the teenager giving security problems and stepped in to help.
Lonon ran to the parking lot where investigators say he assaulted May and stomped on his leg multiple times.
"As part of the surgery, they're probably going to have to install some pins and a metal plate in his leg for his injuries. That's bad news obviously for Officer May, the doctors tell him he's going to be out of commission for about four months," said Cmdr. Brian Childress, VPD.
Commander Childress calls May a hero for stepping in and helping Wal-Mart security workers that day.
