DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -
Some street name confusion has sparked a debate among Albany city commissioners on whether to make changes.
At Tuesday's meeting city commissioners were asked to change Champion Lane to Courthouse Lane. It's a short, one-way street next to the courthouse, which no one lives on.
There's currently a Champion Avenue in Southeast Albany. Those encouraging the change say 11 people live on that road and it would be a hassle for them.
Dougherty County EMS officials requested the name change after some confusion during an ambulance call.
"I think we should be consistent and make sure that those that have been recognized for their great service to this community, that it is indeed recognized. And the Champion family has done a lot of work for the city," said Commissioner Ivey Hines.
A member of the Champion family asked commissioners not to change it, saying Champion Lane, the one downtown, is named after J.P. Champion and it memorializes their entire family.
Commissioners informally voted to change Champion Lane to J.P. Champion Lane. An official vote will be made at their night meeting on January 22nd.
