Valdosta Police Chief serves as interim

The old police chief in Valdosta is the new chief, at least for now.

Chief Frank Simons retired at the end of the year after 17 years as chief. But city officials asked him to stay on as interim chief for the next 2 to 3 months while they find a replacement.

City Manager Larry Hanson says they're going through about 45 applications.

"It does take some time, because you want to make the right decision, you want to ask the right questions, and you want to involve others in the process. Because we're making a decision about what's good for the city, and what's good for the men and women of the department," said Hanson.

Hanson says he hopes to have a new police chief in 60 days.
