DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -

Dougherty County commissioners have passed a resolution to help collect delinquent property taxes on foreclosed homes.

Monday commissioners approved a judicial ad valorem tax. It gives the Dougherty County tax department an alternative method to collecting delinquent property taxes.

Some foreclosed homes don't sell because purchaser's aren't willing to buy them because of significant title problems.

"You can take those properties to the court system, the superior court, a judge can then order the tax sale and throughout that process the title will be cleared. And then the purchaser will gain good title to the property," said Spencer Lee, the Dougherty County attorney.

Selling these homes helps take the burden off tax paying citizens.  The Georgia General assembly has provided this tool as a different procedure to the non-judicial tax sale.
