ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Georgia Power plans to ask permission to decertify 15 coal and oil-fired generating units across the state. But Plant Mitchell in southern Dougherty County is not one of them.
Georgia Power announced Monday they'll seek approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission because it's no longer economical to operate the units.
The utility says the cost to install environmental controls to comply with existing and expected new regulations was a factor in the decision.
The long-range plan is still to convert Plant Mitchell from coal to biomass, specifically pulp wood products.
"There is so much excess capacity here that it's just a natural here for this area. And what it would do is enable us to convert what is a coal fired unit to a green biomass unit. And we're still hoping to move forward with that," said Jay Smith, Ga. Power Albany Area Manager.
Plant Mitchell has 36 employees. The units Georgia Power will ask to decertify are in Putnam, Coweta, Glynn, and Chatham Counties.
The PSC is expected to vote on the request this summer.
