DECATUR COUNTY, GA (WALB) -
Officials with the Decatur County Sheriff's Office are investigating a train that derailed from its tracks Sunday night.
Investigators say the train, was passing through Bainbridge around 10:00 Sunday night when an unknown problem caused the train to go into emergency mode.
CSX is the railroad transportation company that owns the train, it's tracks, and the cars that transport thousands of pounds of cargo to and from Decatur County everyday.
But officials say, they're lucky the empty train cars derailed where they did.
"No hazardous material what so ever. Basically some flatbed cars and smaller cargo cars but no tankers. But it actually happened in a pretty good place, very rural area, no roads are blocked," said Decatur County Sheriff Wiley Griffin.
The pileup is located on private property about three miles west of Bainbridge city limits and while officials say they're thankful no one was injured, they now have the major task of restoring the damaged railroad.
"They'll have the track down you know by around three or four o'clock today and then they'll have everything cleared by about 12 o'clock tonight. but they'll be working to get everything cleared up," said the sheriff.
CSX brought in additional help from railroad construction companies like Utilco Railroad Services to assist with reconstruction.
Officials say the track will have to be replaced before the damaged cars can be removed. "They'll lay the log, lay the timbers, lay the railroad tracks, get that completed. And then they'll bring in the cranes to pick up those cars and put them back on the tracks."
The cause of the derailed train is still under investigation but officials say their thankful no one was injured in the pileup.
