ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
Every day hundreds of people walk through the doors of Jimmie's Hot Dogs and order their famous chili dog, but Friday afternoon one man walked in with something else on his mind.
"I think he had ordered a hot dog. He said he was waiting on cash. He had a credit card in his hand," says owner Tommy Mathes.
44-year-old Dwayne McNair waited patiently in line after he ordered and then told employees he didn't have any cash. Police say after waiting a couple of minutes, he made his move.
"We actually had a lot of people in jimmy's hot dogs. They were on their cell phones. By the time I went out, they were on their cell phones. They were calling the police," says Mathes.
Minutes after he stole about $250 from the cash register police spotted McNair just two blocks down the road from the hot dog joint on south Jackson Street.
"They really did a good job. Within 3, 4, 5 minutes the guy was caught not even two blocks away," says Mathes.
Mathes was in the back office of the restaurant when the robbery happened. He says McNair should have known better than to steal from a business that sits right across the street from the police station.
"This is the first time this has ever happened. So it really is safe I mean right across the street from the police station. This has never happened hopefully it will never happen again."
Police arrested and charged McNair with robbery by snatching and took him to the Dougherty County jail where he remains Saturday night.
