LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -
Dougherty and Lee county officials are working to get their transportation issues fixed.
This is Highway 82 and Hickory Grove Road where a traffic signal and reduced speed limit is proposed. It is just one of four projects the DOT is considering.
Reconstructing Starksville Road, building the Westover Road Extension Underpass, and constructing the Leesburg North Bypass are the other three projects officials say are vital to making the roads more safe while also furthering economic growth.
Officials say it is important to build a relationship with the Georgia Department of Transportation in order to get the funding they need.
"The reality of government and governance, it is still about relationships, and being able to talk with somebody and them understanding what you are talking about, when he is looking at projects he will say, 'oh yea, I remember that intersection, let's make sure we are dong those things'," says Rick Muggridge, Lee Co. Board of Commissioners Vice Chair.
Lee County officials have already started working on part of the Westover Road Extension from Fussell Road to Ledo Road to show the state they are willing to use some of their money on these projects as well.
