D.A. warns those required to report abuse

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Prosecutors say a 15-year-old girl was raped after a school administrator delayed reporting suspected abuse.

The District Attorney sent the school board a letter urging members to make sure educators report possible abuse immediately.

In October a Dougherty High student told a teacher she was being sexually abused at home.

The teacher informed an Assistant Principal, but that administrator didn't tell police until the next day.

The D.A. says in the meantime, the girl's father raped her.

Georgia law says educators have 24-hours to report suspected child abuse, but the D.A. doesn't want them to wait to contact investigators.

"In my letter, while the letter of the law was followed, the report was made. But had the report been made immediately perhaps no further abuse, as alleged, might have been prevented," Edwards said.

The Dougherty County School System spokesman said they are waiting for the new administration to take charge to send a recommendation to the board about this law.
