ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
You probably shouldn't wait by the mailbox for your tax refund check, because this year it could show up two months later than normal. It probably will be smaller than usual too.
You can't file as early either, and it's all because of the Fiscal Cliff.
Wilhelmina Howard likes to file her taxes early. "I look forward to it, I pay my taxes with it, I really want to get it very early," she said.
But this year, she and millions of others may not be able to. "It's going to make me put off a lot of things that would have been paid on time so it will affect me..."
The IRS can't put out 2012 tax forms until the agency knows what the tax policy is. Thanks to the Fiscal cliff, everything has been delayed.
"You don't want to release all the forms until you know what the rules are going to be..." CPA John McDuffie says he normally advises clients to file early, but not this year.
"The IRS has got to get the computers programmed to receive information and the tax preparation software must be adjusted,' he said.
That means Wilhelmina Howard will have to rearrange her plans until she gets the money she normally depends on. "It's a heavier weight; you know you have more burdens to bear."
She also won't be getting as much back due to a two percent hike in Social Security taxes. "It's going to hurt everyone... it's going to hurt everyone…"
The IRS hasn't said when they will start accepting tax returns but the later the tax return, the later the tax refund.
