Pelham family of 8 loses home to fire

PELHAM, GA (WALB) -

A Pelham family is without a home after a fire late Wednesday night destroyed their home.

Eight family members are looking for a place to stay and a way to start over after losing everything.

"You can see Christmas stuff, brand new still, gifts are all gone," said homeowner Umeka Moore-Starling.

Moore-Starling showed the damage to her Liberia Street home in Pelham after a late night fire destroyed it.

"Me and my momma was in the bed watching TV and my nephew ran in there after we heard something go pop!" said Moore-Starling.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It may have started in the kitchen or utility room which shares a wall.

"I told him to stop playing. I said boy this ain't no time to be playing. The he said look auntie the kitchen is on fire, something has blown up. So we all jumped up and this whole wall was on fire," said Moore-Starling.

To add insult to injury, Moore-Starling's insurance policy ended at the beginning of the new year and she was in the process of finding a new company.

Now she must face this heartbreaking incident and figure out where her and her family will stay after Thursday night.

They're currently staying in a hotel paid for by the Red Cross.

"If it was one way you could explain it, you could explain it as if it was a death because it feels like a part of you has died when you lost everything and we lost everything!" said Moore-Starling.

But she is happy that her family made it out of the burning home safely.

"That's the biggest blessing because you can always replace clothes, shoes, furniture, stove, refrigerator and you can always buy some more food to eat, but you can't replace a life," said Moore-Starling.

The family has an account set up at the Pelham Bank and Company. You can make a donation to the Pelham Jayhawks account.

Firefighters aren't sure what caused the fire. They're still investigating.
