CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

A new tax is now being collected in a few counties in our area.

Crisp County is in one of a handful of regions of the state that passed the T-SPLOST.

The extra penny in sales tax went into effect Tuesday to fund transportation and infrastructure projects.

Officials in Cordele say it's a double win for them.

Not only will they benefit from T-SPLOST projects, but they'll only have to pay 10% of the cost of state transportation projects there.

Communities in regions that didn't approve the tax will have to match 30% of state grants.

"Even though it seems like to the average citizen out here, paying an extra penny in sales tax that that's more money out of their pocket, only having to come up with a 10% match instead of 30% of that money. There's a big difference there and that would usually come out of tax revues on property taxes and things like that," said Cordele Interim City Manager Edward Beach

The River Valley Region was one of just three that passed the penny sales tax in July.

It was defeated in 9 regions.

Cordele officials say the biggest project on their list is a new bridge to connect Crisp and Sumter Counties over Lake Blackshear.
