CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Gas prices are starting higher in 2013 than they were this time last year, but we may not feel as much pain at the pump this year.

We paid more for gasoline in 2012 than ever.

The folks at AAA say the national average price for gas last year was $3.60 per gallon.

That eclipsed the previous year's record of $3.51.

Some drivers told us those high prices definitely hurt their wallets last year.

"I think not only I, but many Americans across the nation have felt the pinch, especially the middle class. If you got a job that you don't get a lot of raises at, it really hurts," said driver Scott Sealy.

AAA projects gas prices will remain high in 2013, but they don't expect them to be as high as last year.

They say higher crude oil prices and tension in the Middle East caused price spikes in 2012.
