Bishop: Cliff deal isn't perfect

Representative Sanford Bishop says he's upset Congress waited until after the fiscal cliff deadline passed to approve a deal.

The House passed the bill late last night. Bishop says he is pleased the deal prevents major tax hikes for middle class Americans and extends long-term unemployment benefits.

He says there is still much work to do to get the deficit down.

"It's not perfect. It's the result of compromise. As the result of a compromise neither side gets everything that it wants. I would have preferred a grand bargain that would have reduced the deficit, avert the sequester as well strengthen the economy over the long term. But I have to say what we did yesterday is a good first step," said Bishop.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 257 to 167. All the Georgia Republicans voted against it.

Bishop also talked about efforts to prevent deep military spending cuts that would affect a lot of south Georgians.
