ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

There were approximately 21 calls regarding the discharging of firearms in Albany over the new year celebration.

This happened despite appeals to the public by the Albany Police Department, in which officials asked citizens not to fire their guns into the air to celebrate the end of 2012, and the arrival of 2013.

APD says that case number 000001, the first report made in 2013, proved to be a close call for a West District Officer.

APD's report says: At 12:07 a.m., Officer Robert Riddle was standing next to his assigned patrol car in the parking lot of the West District on Dawson Road when a stray bullet fell from the sky and struck the windshield of the vehicle.

The bullet, which was recovered, made a small nick in the glass near the rear view mirror. Riddle was not injured. There are no suspects at this time.
