ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Nearly a quarter of couples get engaged between Thanksgiving and New Year's, meaning many women will ring in the new year with a ring on it.

Local jewelry stores say they've been busy with men and women stopping by to look for that perfect diamond.

They say sales have increased since early December.

"Sales have been very very great. Everyone has been coming in looking from the promise rings to the big diamonds for engagements as well as Christmas and Valentine's Day," says Alisha Bryant with a local jewelry store.

The average American engagement is 16 months long and the wedding industry considers the holiday season to be their busiest time of the year.
