Viewpoint: So. GA generosity

We always knew that people in the Albany Metro area were good and generous people. What we didn't realize is just how generous and giving you really are.

People in the Albany metro area give more of their money to charities than folks in any other area in Georgia.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy, one of the nation's leading publications on philanthropy, says our five-county metro area gave close to $70 million in 2011 alone. That's the most per capita in Georgia.

And it's not just the highest income people who give. Those whose income ranged from $50,000 to $99,000 a year gave the largest share of their paychecks to charity.

Albany non-profit organizations feel that support. Major Kelley English of the Salvation Army said: "This has really blown me away, just to see how nice people are and to see how much the community actually cares about itself. It's pretty awesome."

We agree, It's pretty awesome.

We should all be proud to be a part of the generosity of this area.
