ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
After responding to many false alarms from security systems, three metro Atlanta cities are instituting fines for false alarms.
The city of Albany has had a similar ordinance in effect since 2001.
The city gives you five false alarm warnings in one year before they start assessing fines.
"5 to 10 false alarms is $25, 11 to 15 is $50 and when they get up to 16, it's $100 per each response that's determined to be a false alarm," said Lynn McCracken with Albany Code Enforcement.
McCracken says responding to false alarms cost taxpayers $288,000 last year. The fines help offset those costs.
He says the number of false alarms has decreased since the ordinance went into effect.
