Sanford Bishop on fiscal cliff: “I’m downright disgusted”

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

No real progress to report, Monday night, just four days before the federal government falls off that fiscal cliff.

President Obama is back at the White House. He returned from Hawaii Monday, but the House of Representatives isn't even in session.

With the nation being pushed to the brink as the fiscal cliff deadline looms, Congressman Sanford Bishop is criticizing Republicans for what he calls a lack of willingness to compromise.

"Quite frankly I'm upset, disappointed and downright disgusted. I feel like Speaker Boehner and the Republican congress wasted our precious days in the past few weeks with in-fighting and then out of frustration the speaker sent us home because they could not agree to a compromise for the good of the country," said Congressman Bishop.

At least the Senate is in session, but each side just seems to be blaming the other.

"It's the countdown to midnight, start of a new year. This year, Mister President, the American people are waiting for the ball to drop, but it's not going to be a good drop," said Nevada Democratic Senator Harry Reid.

Republicans are firing back, saying a rush into a compromise won't benefit Americans.

"Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything Senate Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. That wouldn't be fair to the American people," said Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell.

But Bishop says something needs to be done and quickly to avoid deep spending cuts and higher taxes for America's most vulnerable citizens.

"We need to reach a sensible compromise. We need to restore hope in American people and confidence that congress can take care of the people's business," said Congressman Bishop.

"I certainly hope that cooler heads will prevail and a census and compromised will be reached. I'm hopeful that will happen," he continued.

Now both parties have just days to come to an agreement before going over what could be a very dangerous fiscal cliff.

Without a deal by Monday night, everyone's taxes will go up and drastic spending cuts will automatically kick in.

House Speaker John Boehner now says he will call the House of Representatives back in session Sunday, just one day before the deadline.
