THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -
The suspect in an overnight shooting in Thomasville is already out of jail.
Investigators are trying to piece together just what happened that left one man in the hospital.
They arrested 30-year old Marcus Williams Thursday morning in connection with shooting 35-year old Jamal Hayes, but now Williams is free on bond.
Thomasville Police received a call around 2 a.m. saying a fight was in progress in the 700 block of Fletcher Street.
"Upon arrival officers had determined that the fight had broken up and someone had been loaded into a vehicle and they were told that someone was heading to the hospital. Officers proceeded to the hospital where they found a Jamal Hayes in the front seat of a passenger vehicle," said Lt. Eric Hampton.
Police say Hayes was shot in the abdomen.
Marcus Williams was arrested Thursday morning and was originally charged with aggravated battery, but was released on a $500 bond with the charges lowered to reckless conduct.
"It is unknown how they knew each other at this time, or what caused the actual fight, or what caused the entire incident. But we do know something happened between these two gentlemen," said Hampton.
Police say they hope incidents like this will prevent folks from taking part in a dangerous New Year's Eve tradition.
"Definitely do not recommend people using firearms and discharging firearms at midnight or anytime. We don't want people to discharge firearms because firearms are dangerous. When you shoot a firearm, a bullet, it can go anywhere. It can hurt innocent people," said Hampton.
Police say they are waiting for Hayes to be well enough before they can try to learn more about what happened that night.
