Man charged after fatal race

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

A suspected drag racer is free on bond after surrendering to police.

19-year old Sharron Thompson is charged with failure to report an accident with injury after leaving the scene of a crash which took the lives of two Thomasville men.

A deputy witnessed what he thought were two Ford Crown Victorias drag racing on 319 in Thomasville just after 1 a.m. Monday morning.

Investigators say the deputy was not actually chasing them, but was trying to keep them in his sights.

The deputy followed the taillights of Thompson's vehicle without realizing that the lead car had crashed.

"This was a preventable crash. There is absolutely no reason for that to have occurred," said Captain Steve Jones.

The deputy turned back after receiving a call about the accident.

24-year old Michael Bevard and 28-year old Damian Brown were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their car drove through a fence and crashed into a tree on South Pinetree Boulevard.

"Reckless driving was involved and anytime you increase your speed, your reaction time decreases and any mistake behind the wheel can be amplified with tragic results," said Cpl. Jeromy Roberts.

"Something that happened in the spur of the moment, not thinking. And it's over just that fast. I can't express enough sympathy for the families this time of the year," said Jones.

Castarvis Thomas says he knew Bevard and Brown. "We raised up a lot of money and toys and stuff to give away this Saturday that just passed to the kids less fortunate of the community."

Thompson turned himself in Tuesday after investigators found the car he was driving the night of the incident.

Investigators say Thompson was friends with the crash victims.
