Even today's dreary weather didn't dampen the Christmas spirit around south Georgia.

Christmas day is such a great family time.

WALB News Ten's Lydia Jennings spent part of her Christmas Day with a south Georgia family as they celebrated the most wonderful time of the year.

The stockings were empty, the presents unwrapped, and Santa ate all of the cookies the Colbert family left out last night. Laurie Colbert says today will go down as another successful Christmas.

"His response this morning was, 'This is the best Christmas ever!" So when you hear that, that's pretty good," said Laurie.

Brian Colbert an engineer and Laurie a school teacher say they're blessed to be able to give their children a wonderful Christmas even in a bad economy.

"We are fortunate especially in these times, we are so fortunate we have food, and we have each other, and we have a house," said Laurie.

Like many families, Christmas is their favorite time of year, the Colbert's even had their tree up on Thanksgiving Day. But tonight the family begins to take down their decorations as they prepare to get on the road to see their families up north.

"Tonight it is just the kids and us. We do not have any family in town, so it'll just be the five of us. But when we go up north to see our families it'll be a big late Christmas get together," said Laurie.

But the Colbert's say Christmas isn't just about them; Brian and Laurie like to show their children the true meaning of Christmas by helping out the less fortunate. Together with their church, Park Avenue United Methodist, they helped prepare meals for the homeless.

"Anything we can do, that's the thing, anything we can do and it's easy, giving your time is easy, so we can do that," said Laurie.  

Along with dozens of volunteers, they gave up a part of their Christmas Day to deliver nearly 500 hot meals to people in need in Valdosta.

The boys Braden and Bennett said their favorite present was an X-Box. And Lexi said she loves all of her new shoes.
