ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Folks from all over Southwest Georgia came to an Albany church to learn the real meaning of Christmas, Monday night.

Hundreds gathered in the sanctuary of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church in Albany.

"The real meaning of Christmas is that Christ came to the world and God sent his only son for us," said Assistant Minister William Collins.

At Monday night's service, Senior Pastor Leigh Ann Raynor read to children about the night Jesus Christ was born.

Some of the older members of the church say it's important to teach children about the real meaning of Christmas now rather than waiting until they're older.

They say gifts aren't the only things you should be thankful for this Christmas.

"Christmas is very much about family, about the holy family, and this is the greatest family night of the year," said Porterfield Director of Music Steven Jones.

"Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. I do get presents and I love them of course, but that is the real meaning," said member Liz Gaines.

"You can get caught up in that (getting gifts), but it's good to think back on the real meaning. We should think about peace and God instead of thinking about all the hectic things of Christmas," Gaines continued.

The highlight of the service was communion, where many broke bread which signifies the body of Christ and drank wine which represents the blood.

"It takes the manger to the cross and it ties it all together. We remember what Christ means to us and the gift he was to us, said Collins.

Collins hopes the congregation takes away the real meaning of this holiday.

"Peace, hope love and joy and that Christ is the center of Christmas," said Collins.

All of the Christmas offerings collected went to Vashti, a united Methodist ministry for children.
