ALBANY, GA -
A duplex fire leaves two Albany families homeless just days before Christmas.
Shurniki Forbes got a phone call Saturday afternoon that no one wants to receive, especially just days before Christmas.
"We were out doing Christmas shopping for the grandkids while I was in the store I was coming out, that's when my cousin was yelling to hurry up because she got a call saying that the house was on fire. We just started running and jumped in the car and when I got here I saw what had happened," said Forbes.
Neighbors told her that her home, on Emily Avenue was going up in flames. Investigators say the fire started in the kitchen because an unintended pot was left on the stove.
"I lost everything, considering I was living here with my cousin and me and my kids. And we lost everything that we had," said Kenya Walker.
Officials say the fire caused about $28,000 worth of damage, but no one was injured.
The Red Cross will be assisting the two families displaced by the fire.
