Weekend before Christmas is busiest shopping time

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Cash registers are ringing non-stop Friday and retailers expect to get even busier this weekend as people rush to finish their Christmas shopping.

The weekend before Christmas is usually one of the busiest shopping times of the year. It could be even busier this year.

Store managers say folks are waiting until the last minute to get everything they need but the stores are ready for the big crowds.

There's no surprise that many folks wait until the last minute to do their holiday shopping and it's no different here in southwest Georgia.

"Albany has always been a last minute store," said Derek Stokes, Store Manager.

"I guess time just got away this year and we still have a lot of Christmas gifts to get," said Whitney Erdmann, Holiday Shopper.

"Me and my mom have been shopping a lot," said Aaliyah Young, Holiday Shopper.

People have been piling into retail and department stores, trying to get those last minute items.

"We've just seen a lot of guest in here getting their last minute stocking stuffers and all their gift wrapping done. Everything that has to been under the tree, they're coming in to get it right now," said Young.

Officials with Target say they've exceed their expected sales in the past 5 days. Other places like Belk say the same thing. And all stores say since Christmas Day closely follows the weekend, they expect booming business.

"Because of the calendar shift last year we pick up the weekend. What a better time to pick up the weekend than when you're going into the holiday shopping, the last few days," said Julia Yarborough, Target Executive Team Lead.

Retail experts say the biggest items right now are gift cards and stocking stuffers items that can be picked up anywhere.

"That's just something that is a big-big item and a really great gift to give someone that you may not know what to get for them," said Yarborough.

So whether you're looking for that perfect gift for a loved one, or you're in need of a couple rolls of wrapping paper, this weekend might be the last time to mark everything off your list.

Most stores I've spoke with say they'll be closed Christmas Day but will reopen bright and early Wednesday, the 26th, if you need to return items and buy things Santa didn't bring you.
