THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Whether you're a full-time grower or just a backyard gardener, Ag experts recommended you test your soil for nutrient and PH levels.

And now is the time to do it.

They recommend using a clean shovel or trowel to collect 8 to 10 samples of soil and mixing it in a plastic bucket to avoid metal contamination.

You can place the soil in a UGA soil sample bag found at your county extension office.

"This time of the year is a good time to sample because if your PH is low, it is recommended to apply lime. Lime needs a good few months to break down into the soil," said Thomas County Extension Agent Andrew Sawyer.

Your local extension office will send the samples to the testing lab in Athens.

Results should be back in a week to 10 days.

The cost is $6 a sample.
