Vigil held in memory of Worth Co. man

WORTH CO., GA (WALB) -

Family and friends of 24-year-old Lewis Mills lit candles, Thursday night, in memory of the Worth County man whose life was cut short.

"It's hard, very hard. Without his memories and without God, I would have never made it. I'd be in the crazy house," said Lewis Mills' mother Ida Mills.

On December 20th, 2010, Mills was walking along the rail of a bridge in Louisiana when he fell over. Authorities searched for his body for days but never found it.

Mills' mother Ida says not finding her son's body has left a void in her life.

"It is no closure not knowing what really happened to him. They tell me he fell in a river but that's all I know," said Mills.

Mills is survived by his daughter. Ida admits this time of year is especially hard for her granddaughter because of the holiday season.

"Her birthday comes around, she wants her daddy. Christmas is coming up and this will be her third year without him. She cries at night for her daddy and I can't tell her anything," said Mills.

For now, this mother just wants answers and hopes she can soon have her son's body for a proper burial.

"We still love him and we still miss him and we're not giving up. I hope one day something comes up and I can bring what's left of him home," said Mills.

Mills prays no mother has to experience what she has for the past two years.

Lewis Mills was in Louisiana for work at the time of his death.

Local authorities in Patterson, Louisiana and the US Coast Guard searched Wax Lake Outlet for days before giving up the search.
