ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police and the Recreation and Parks Department held a Christmas celebration today for area grandparents who also learned some important lessons to keep them safe.

Dozens of seniors gathered at the Lockett Station Community Center for the event which featured door prizes and lunch.

Detectives with APD's family protection division talked about the importance of keeping in touch with others so they know you're safe.

Organizers say this not only spreads cheer to seniors but also offers important tips on how to keep safe and stay active.

"Out there now with so much crime, you do need a second set of eyes to watch out for you when you're taking your package to the car. Mostly today is just them getting away from the grandkids and just to come out and have lunch," said Tee Taylor, Albany Recreation and Parks.

This is the 9th annual Grandparents Day Christmas Event.

APD and the Recreation Department also sponsor a senior's Valentine's Day social and a senior prom.
