Viewpoint: Blazers win again!

Posted: Updated:

Valdosta has rightfully earned the nickname "Titletown," and Valdosta has another national title to celebrate.

The Valdosta State Blazers defeated Winston-Salem State 35-7 to win the school's third NCAA Division II national football championship.

It is a great accomplishment for head coach David Dean, his staff, players and the entire Valdosta State athletic department.

After failing to reach the playoffs last season, the Blazer football team dedicated themselves through the off season to win a national championship.

And when the season did not start off the way they planned, Valdosta State won their final ten games to claim the championships.

Winning three national championships in nine seasons is a sign that it is time for the VSU athletic department to look down the road at moving up to the Division I level.

Such moves are not easy and should not be rushed.

They require money, the construction of facilities- namely a football stadium- and adding other sports.

It is an ambitious goal. But the VSU football, softball and tennis teams have all met their ambitious goals of winning national championships recently.

It is time the University, its alumni, fans and the Valdosta-Lowndes County community begin working together to look at the feasibility of a move to the Division I level and long range plan to get there.

A move that would certainly boost University enrollment and will boost the Valdosta-Lowndes County economy.
