CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

A Cordele store clerk was thinking just moments before he jumped an armed robber that he was going to die.

The gunman was holding up the Eastside Grocery when he fought back. Now the store is locked and loaded in case it happens again.

Police don't recommend fighting back against a robber, but Anthony Dixon felt he had little choice in the matter... either fight back or die.

Dixon looks back at the surveillance video showing the moment he thought his life was over. The moment when he fought off an armed robber. "You thought he would shoot you?" we asked.

"I pretty much knew he would. He looked like he was serious," he said.

It was just before 1:00 AM Tuesday. Dixon and another clerk were getting ready to close Eastside Grocery on 8th Avenue when this masked gunman walked in.

"I was fixing me some coffee before I left and a robber walked in with a gun. He aimed at us. He aimed at me first. The he walked over to the booth and demanded money. I laid down on the floor and put my hands. I laid my wallet out for him and everything."

For some reason the robber walked back over to Dixon and pointed a Glock 40 at his head. "He cocked his gun back and the gun jammed. When I heard it jam, I tackled him."

Dixon threw a punch and a scuffle ensued; the robber took off running-- empty handed.

"I looked at like this when he cocked the gun back it was either die, or try to fight and live. I wanna live," Dixon said.

The owners of Eastside Grocery have hired personal security and they're arming themselves now.

"This gun wrestle play is very serious. It's time to beef up the security because you can lose a life like that. Life is more important than a couple of dollars," said Tommy Merrell, the new security guard.

Dixon says he's lucky but would have done it again.

Now police are looking for the gunman who got away empty handed. And since May, two clerks have been shot in armed robberies at Cordele businesses.

In this case it's believed the gunman was young in his late teens or early twenties.

Cordele Police are investigating. If you have any information call them at 229-273-3102.
