Conn. gunman used same weapon as Co. shooter

The weapon 20-year-old Adam Lanza used to kill more than two dozen people, including 20 innocent children, was a popular assault-style rifle similar to the one used in another mass shooting this year.

With a quick internet search, you can see plenty of videos of a Bushmaster .223 semiautomatic rifle in action.

This is the same type of gun 20-year-old Adam Lanza used to kill 26 people inside Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday.

"The Bushmaster is a semiautomatic civilian version of an AR-15 rifle. Nothing special. Nothing particular. It's one of the more popular selling firearms. There have been millions of them manufactured," said Georgia Loan and Gun owner Steven Drew.

This isn't the first time an AR-15-type rifle has been used in a mass shooting.

James Holmes killed 12 people in July after he open fire in a crowded theater in Aurora, Colorado.

"It's light weight, it holds a lot of shots and it doesn't recoil a lot. It's a very, very good gun and a lot of people choose it for home defense," said Drew.

Following Friday's shooting, many asked the question, why is this type of gun on the streets?

Drew says the gun and its ammunition are mainly used for hunting small animals.

"This is a .223, which is the cartridge an AR-15 or a bushmaster would shoot. This cartridge was originally designed to be a varmint cartridge like to shoot wood chucks, gophers, and coyotes. That is what that cartridge is suitable for," said Drew.

But Drew also admits the gun can cause mass casualties in the wrong hands.

"I think if what you are trying to do is kill a lot of people then you would choose something that would be a good tool for that," said Drew.

Drew stresses that responsible gun owners know the shooting was senseless.

I hope that everyone understands that law abiding gun owners are absolutely horrified and disgusted and just in shock like the rest of the nation is.

He says Lanza is responsible for these deaths and guns, themselves, are not to blame.

Connecticut police say Lanza used a Glock 10-milimeter to kill himself. He also had a Sig Sauer on him and a shotgun was found in the trunk of his car.

All of those guns were legally owned by Lanza's mother whom he killed before going to the school.
