VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Some very lucky children in Valdosta were taken on a private shopping spree with Valdosta Police Officers Monday night. @

27 kids shopped the isles of Wal-Mart, picking out whatever toys they wanted for Christmas. Valdosta Police officers raised $5,300 to take the kids shopping. The children were selected by their teachers and school administrators. The Shop With a Cop event organizer says the cops wanted to show the children police officers do more than just take the bad guys to jail.

"It builds up a friendship, it builds up a comradery if you will, you know even with recent events kids need to know we're here to protect them," said Officer Vernotis Williams, VPD.

8-year-old Jamaya Jackson said,"You know a cop is buying me toys and a cop never did that."

This is the department's 8th annual Shop With a Cop event. Officers say as long as they can keep raising the funds, the event will keep growing.
