AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Phoebe Sumter Memorial Hospital in Americus celebrated their first birthday this afternoon.

Sunday, the hospital staff and it's patients were thanked for their dedication and hard work.

The new hospital opened it's doors almost 5 years after a F-3 tornado destroyed the community and it's hospital on March 1, 2007.

Officials say they've come along way since that tragic day.

"We went from no hospital to being in the basement of a baptist church, to having a tent, to having a temporary hospital and a year ago today we've moved into what we think is the finest small hospital in America," says CEO and President of Phoebe Sumter Memorial Keith Petersen.

The hospital says they wanted to take Sunday afternoon to thank every involved in making the hospital a success.
