ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Friday night was a special night as a new wave of Albany Technical College graduates crossed the stage.

The keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony at the Civic Center was Albany Marine Corps Logistics Command Executive Deputy Michael Madden.

Around 1600 students earned diplomas or certificates this semester.

One of them was the first to graduate from Albany Tech's new Civil Engineering Technology program.

"It's great, it's great. There are several people in the program now and hopefully it will grow and more people will come. It's a great program and for me to be the first is a wonderful thing," said graduate Walt Tompkins.

Tompkins already has a job at EMC Engineering Services in Leesburg and plans to use his degree to advance his career.
