CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

An upcoming Georgia state senate Special Election will feature two southwest Georgia doctors.

Retired chiropractor and current businessman Dr. Jeffrey Bivins is running as a Libertarian.

Bainbridge City Councilman and OBGYN Dr. Dean Burke is one of five Republicans in the District 11 race.

"My goal is going to protect their individual sovereignty, their freedom as an individual. Not as a group. Not as a group identity. There is nothing wrong with group identities, but it makes the individual smaller. And as government grows that individual gets smaller still," said Bivins.

"One of my strong suits is my ability to get along with others. To get anything done in Atlanta, you have to have your vote, but you also have to have 28 other Senators votes. And to do that you need to be able to listen and plan together what works for our region," said Burke.

The seat became vacant when Senator John Bulloch resigned because of health issues.

The special election is January 8th.
