LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Demolition is getting underway tonight on the annex to the historic Lowndes County Courthouse.

It was added on in 1962, but county leaders say now it's just an eyesore.

$65,000 in SPLOST revenue will pay for the project.

Since the new county Administration Building was built three years ago, the county hasn't used the annex.

"Now that all of our offices are under one roof, the county is ready to move on with the historical preservation and future uses for the courthouse, and the demolition of the annex is the first step in that direction," said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County Clerk.

The actual bulldozing of the building will begin in January.
