Reward offered for information on South GA arsons

CLAY CO., GA (WALB) -

A reward is being offered Thursday for information in a string of arsons in Clay County.

Over the past few weeks, three homes within a mile radius have been torched.

One was one of the oldest homes in the county.

You'll see signs posted around the city. Police and fire investigators hope the reward money will help lead to an arrest before this fire starter strikes again.

Built in the 1870's the historic Graham House in Ft. Gaines is now a pile of charred rubble. It stood the test of 140 years before succumbing to an arsonist.

"Not here. Not here in Ft. Gaines," said Chief Sam Starling, Ft. Gaines Police.

A rare crime says Police Chief Sam Starling who has responded to three arson fires along Commerce Street since September 30th.

"The first one was to my left here at Lottie Foy's residence," said Starling.

Just before Thanksgiving someone set fire to this abandoned mobile home just yards away. The Graham House was destroyed November 12th.

But it was at the mobile home where the state fire marshal's office nailed down the cause.

"We had a dog to come in from the State Fire Marshal's Office and the dog did hit on an accelerant at that location," said Starling.

In the small city of Ft. Gaines, signs have been posted throughout the town hoping to produce solid leads.

"We've got a $1,000 reward for anybody with any information leading to the arrest in these arsons here in Ft. Gaines," said Starling.

While these homes were vacant, it's still a danger to those who fought the flames, a result of someone's twisted desire to start fires.

And anyone with information leading to an arrest in this case is asked to call either the Ft. Gaines Police Department or the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

The Graham house contained some original carpentry work from 1800's.

As you saw, it was a complete loss.
