ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

South Georgia farmers are learning how to save some money.

The Southwest Georgia Project conducted a free training session Thursday on the new Georgia Agriculture Tax Exemption.

GATE offers qualified agriculture producers a sales tax break on agricultural equipment and other production items.

There are more than $50,000 farmers in Georgia but only about $4,000 have signed up so far.

"When they make purchases for any Ag input for their operation, whether it be equipment, feed, seed, they are able to access that sales tax exemption, and the people that they are buying from, the farms stores, the equipment stores, they are going to ask to see that card," said SWGA Project for Community Education Project Coordinator.

The new tax exemption goes into effect January 1st.

As long as you produce an Ag product or revenue of at least $2,500 you qualify for this exemption.
